The United Actions For Democracy (UAD) and a coalition of civil society organisations have urged the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reconsider moves to concede the party’s Ogun East Senatorial ticket to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The groups made the appeal in Lagos during a press briefing, calling on the party’s National Working Committee to take a careful position on the matter ahead of the 2027 elections.
It would be recalled that APC leaders and stakeholders in Ogun East Senatorial District had earlier endorsed Governor Abiodun as their consensus candidate for the 2027 senatorial race at a meeting held at the Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu-Ode.
The gathering brought together party officials, grassroots representatives, and other stakeholders across the district.
Governor Abiodun, who is currently completing his second term, has also been engaged in political rivalry within the state, particularly with incumbent Senator and former Governor Gbenga Daniel.
Speaking at the briefing, UAD Convener Kunle Ajayi called for what he described as greater integrity in the political process and urged vigilance in candidate selection.
The coalition also raised concerns regarding the governor’s academic and professional background, urging political parties to thoroughly verify candidates before fielding them.
Ajayi also called on relevant authorities, including the Office of the Attorney-General and the National Security Adviser, to review issues relating to public office holders and ensure adherence to due process in line with the law.
In response, Abiodun’s legal representatives maintained that past allegations referenced in public discussions do not affect his eligibility to hold office under Nigerian law, stressing that legal provisions guide qualification for elective positions.
Separately, the Centre for the Advocacy of Human Rights and Social Justice (CAHRSC) dismissed what it described as attempts to undermine the governor’s political ambition through misinformation.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta, Ogun State, CAHRSC leader Olufemi Akindele accused unnamed political actors of sponsoring a smear campaign against Abiodun and urged the public to disregard such claims, describing them as politically motivated distractions ahead of the 2027 elections.
