As Muslims worldwide await the sighting of the crescent moon, which is expected to be visible either on Tuesday or Wednesday evening, to mark the start of Ramadan, it's clear that the month of fasting is not just about abstaining from food and drink. It's a time for spiritual growth, self-reflection, and preparation.

Here are seven key ways Muslims are encouraged to prepare spiritually for Ramadan:

1. Renew Your Intention: Focus on becoming closer to Allah, rather than just fasting. This means reflecting on your motivations and ensuring that your intention (niyyah) is pure. Are you fasting to please Allah, or is it for social or cultural reasons? Renewing your intention helps you stay focused on the true purpose of Ramadan.

2. Engage in Self-Reflection: Assess your character, recognise negative behaviors, and make a conscious effort to change. This involves identifying areas for improvement, such as gossip, anger, or laziness, and working on self-improvement. It's a chance to reflect on your relationships, habits, and overall lifestyle.

3. Set Clear Spiritual Goals: Set quantifiable objectives, like finishing the Qur'an, giving more to charity, or making a commitment to praying every night. Having specific goals helps you stay on track and focused throughout the month. It's essential to make these goals realistic and achievable.

4. Pray to Witness the Month: Pray for the chance to observe Ramadan in good health. This involves expressing gratitude for the opportunity to fast and seeking Allah's guidance and support throughout the month.

5. Begin Acts of Worship Early: Enhance voluntary prayers, Qur'anic recitation, and Allah remembering. This helps create a spiritual momentum, making it easier to maintain a high level of devotion throughout Ramadan. Start with small increments, like adding a few extra minutes of prayer or reciting a few verses of the Qur'an each day.

6. Reconcile with Everyone: Settle personal disputes and ask for forgiveness. Ramadan is a time for spiritual purification, and resolving conflicts with others is essential for achieving this. Reach out to those you've fallen out with, forgive others, and seek forgiveness.

7. Avoid Social Media Distractions: Reduce digital activities to make time for devotion and introspection. Social media can be a significant distraction, making it challenging to focus on spiritual growth. Consider limiting your social media use or taking a break during Ramadan to focus on your spiritual journey.
