...warns of deepening leadership crisis

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State has rejected the appointment of two alleged non-members as chairman and secretary of its membership mobilisation, revalidation and registration committee, describing the move as unconstitutional and capable of deepening the party’s leadership crisis.

The party urged its national headquarters to refrain from actions that could destabilise its structure and undermine unity and cohesion in the state.

“We strongly reject these appointments and will not allow such actions to stand without consultation or prior engagement with the leaders in the state,” the party stated.

Those appointed are Hon. Abdullahi Maigwandu as Chairman and Aliyu Muhammad Rabah as Secretary. Their emergence has further heightened tensions within the party, which is already embroiled in a factional dispute between Hon. Muhammad Faruk and Hon. Kegan, both laying claim to the state chairmanship.

Addressing journalists at the party’s state secretariat in Sokoto on Monday, the factional Chairman, Hon. Muhammad Faruk, alongside members of his executive committee, alleged that the appointments violated the party’s constitution. He maintained that the appointees were not card-carrying members of the ADC.

Faruk said Maigwandu served as a commissioner under the immediate past administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state and was appointed to the committee a day after resigning from the party.

He added that Rabah also recently defected from the PDP before being named Secretary of the committee.

According to Faruk, the action undermines the authority of what he described as the duly recognised state leadership and disrespects loyal members of the party in Sokoto.

The Faruk-led faction appealed to state and local government executives to remain calm while it pursues legal action to challenge what it termed attempts to hijack the party’s structure through undemocratic means.

The group also cautioned members and the public against collecting membership cards not issued by what it described as the legitimate state leadership, warning that such cards may be declared invalid.
