The South West Development Commission (SWDC) is set to convene a two-day roundtable in Ibadan, Oyo State, this week to finalise stakeholder participation in TranSComs, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming rural economies across the region and reducing poverty.

The meeting, scheduled to hold at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture on Tuesday, April 5, and Wednesday, April 6, 2026, will bring together Development Finance Institutions, private sector players, representatives of the six South West states, and other strategic partners.

Participants are expected to identify areas of collaboration and commit to defined roles in the implementation of the programme.

TranSComs—short for “Transformed Communities”—is being implemented in partnership with the Foundation for Technology Innovation and Sustainable Development. The initiative is designed as an integrated development model linking agriculture, energy, healthcare, and digital infrastructure across 137 local government areas in Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, and Ekiti states.

The roundtable is expected to mobilise support for critical infrastructure, including road construction, electricity provision, healthcare facilities, and internet connectivity in rural communities.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SWDC, Charles Diji Akinola, said the initiative is structured to reposition agriculture as a driver of broader economic development.

“TranSComs is a strategic platform for rural transformation through commercially viable agricultural ecosystems,” he said.

According to him, the programme integrates agriculture with housing, logistics, enterprise development, infrastructure, and youth employment, shifting the sector from fragmented production to a coordinated regional value chain capable of generating jobs, boosting rural incomes, and supporting exports.
