Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone expressed satisfaction with Ademola Lookman’s performance following the Colchoneros’ 4-2 victory over Espanyol. The Nigerian international found the net in the high-scoring affair, marking his first LaLiga goal for the club.

Since joining the Rojiblancos, the 28-year-old has been in scintillating form, tallying four goals and two assists in just six appearances. However, despite Lookman’s clinical start, Simeone remains a demanding taskmaster. While acknowledging the winger’s offensive prowess, the Atleti boss challenged him to refine the grittier aspects of his game.

“Lookman brings us goals—more goals than overall play at the moment,” Simeone told reporters. “He can still improve his involvement in the build-up and his defensive contributions.”

Simeone’s stance seemingly confirms the fears of former Nigerian international Ifeanyi Udeze, who previously warned that the Argentine’s ultra-defensive philosophy might stifle the skillful style of the former African Footballer of the Year.

“The move isn't bad in itself,” the former West Brom defender remarked after Lookman completed his €40 million move from Atalanta. “My only fear is that Simeone might change his style so much that his core skills are suppressed. Simeone prioritizes constant marking over individual brilliance. Lookman’s work rate will have to be exceptionally high to thrive.”

Conversely, 1992 AFCON bronze medallist Friday Ekpo argued that Simeone’s rigorous demands would refine Lookman’s versatility. “Football isn’t just about attacking; defense starts from the front,” Ekpo told Brila FM. “I believe Atletico’s approach will make Lookman a more complete player.”

Whether the 28-year-old can balance his natural flair with Simeone’s "blood and thunder" tactics remains the season's big question.
