Team Nigeria's preparation camp for the World Athletics Relays Championship in Gaborone, Botswana, opened on Sunday in Lagos.
Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Technical Director Gabriel Okon is overseeing the one-week programme, with foreign-based athletes scheduled to link up with the squad directly in Gaborone ahead of the championship on 2–3 May 2026.
In a related development, several Nigerian athletes posted competitive performances at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix over the weekend, building momentum ahead of upcoming meets in Gaborone and Accra.
In the women's 400m, Patience Okon George claimed third in 51.70 seconds, finishing behind winner Femi Adekoya (50.28) and Mercy Chebet (51.38) in one of the standout events of the meet.
Nathaniel Samson rounded out the podium in the men's 400m, clocking 45.89 behind Botswana's Justice Oratile (44.92) and Ruathdel Nhial Gnange (45.53).
Chidi Okezie claimed third in the men's 200m in 20.92 seconds, with Kenya's Samuel Chege Waweru taking the win in 20.63 ahead of compatriot Zablon Ekwam (20.85).

In the men's 110m hurdles, Musa Wisdom finished third in 14.34, behind winner Anthony Edward Jr (13.61) and Yusuf Badawi (13.76).
AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa attended the event as a special guest of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation, with his presence reflecting growing collaboration across African athletics.
World Athletics has confirmed that Ethiopia will host a Gold Label Grand Prix in 2027, further cementing the country's standing as a premier track and field destination on the continent.
