The European University of Nigeria (EUN) has reaffirmed its commitment to research-driven education and innovation as it formally admitted its pioneer students during the institution’s maiden matriculation ceremony.

The Chancellor of the university, Sen. Nicholas Ukachukwu, said the institution had established a N50 billion research endowment fund to support specialised studies and innovation across critical sectors.

Ukachukwu disclosed this in an interview on the sidelines of the ceremony, explaining that the fund was designed to ensure that research conducted in the university produces practical outcomes capable of addressing societal needs.

According to him, the university was conceived as a centre for research and technological advancement, with focus on disciplines such as medicine, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and other technical fields.

He said the research framework of the institution would support projects from the stage of discovery to practical application, particularly in areas such as drug development and technology innovation.

Ukachukwu emphasised that the university’s approach to research would prioritise real impact and sustainability, noting that research outcomes must not be allowed to remain unused.

“I cannot call people, including myself, to put together N50 billion and allow research to remain on shelves gathering dust. Whatever we invest in must produce results and impact lives,” he said.

The chancellor added that the institution was assembling high-level professionals, modern equipment and advanced technology to create a centre of excellence capable of driving innovation and supporting future partnerships.

According to him, while collaboration remains open, the university intends to lead in the development of research infrastructure that could also benefit public institutions.

“In the next one to five years, the results will begin to speak for themselves,” he said.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Emmanuel Ibezim, described the matriculation ceremony as a historic milestone, marking the formal admission of the institution’s first set of students.

He congratulated the students on gaining admission into the university and urged them to take full advantage of the academic opportunities available.

“Today marks a defining milestone in your lives. By taking the matriculation oath, you are joining a community bound by scholarship, integrity, discipline and service to humanity,” he said.
Ibezim emphasised that the university’s mandate goes beyond awarding certificates, stressing that the institution aims to produce graduates who are innovative, ethically grounded and globally competitive.

He encouraged the students to pursue academic excellence with diligence, while embracing critical thinking, creativity and innovation.

The Vice-Chancellor also reiterated the institution’s zero tolerance for examination malpractice, cultism, harassment, drug abuse and other forms of misconduct, urging students to uphold discipline and integrity throughout their academic journey.

He further encouraged them to participate in approved extracurricular activities, sports and student organisations to develop leadership and teamwork skills.

Ibezim assured parents and guardians that the university management would continue to strengthen teaching, research, innovation, infrastructure and student welfare in line with the institution’s vision.

Highlight of the event was the administration of the matriculation oath, declaration of loyalty and signing of the matriculation register by the matriculating students, signifying their formal admission into the university.
