Nwoko urges Nigerians first mentality
The icing on the cake was McPherson University’s second inaugural lecture, where the government was charged to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians in its foreign policy decisions. Professor of History and International Relation, the lecture was delivered by Prof. Kenneth Chukwuemeka Nwoko.
The lecture, titled: Nigeria’s Peacekeeping and Regional Security Engagements since 1960: Balancing National Interests and International Commitments was held under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Francis Igbasan, and attended by members of the university community, friends, family, and well-wishers.
Prof. Nwoko examined Nigeria’s role in peacekeeping and regional security across Africa. He traced the country’s involvement from the Congo operation in 1960 to interventions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Mali under ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations.
Noting that Nigeria has played a major role in promoting peace on the continent, he said the country’s involvement has come at significant cost, including huge financial spending and loss of lives. He added that many observers believe Nigeria has given more than it has gained from these engagements.
He, therefore, charged the government to adopt a “Nigerians first” approach in its foreign policy. He also called for better planning, stronger collaboration with regional organisations, and ensuring that peacekeeping missions align with the country’s capacity and national interest.

Student’s visit NIIA
Students of McPherson University have undertaken an academic excursion to the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), as part of efforts to bridge the gap between classroom theory and the practical realities of global diplomacy. The students were led by the Acting Head of Department, Dr. Paul Ojo, alongside Mr. Ogunmakin Oyewumi. The visit involved 300 level students of International Relations, who were exposed to key aspects of Nigeria’s foreign policy and strategic engagements.
The delegation was received by the Director General of the institute, Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, alongside other scholars and experts in diplomatic studies. Adding an international perspective to the engagement, Prof. João Bosco Monte addressed the students, highlighting the importance of South South cooperation, particularly between Brazil and Africa.
Speaking during the session, Monte encouraged the students to recognise their role in shaping the future of global relations. Quoting Nelson Mandela, he emphasised that young people have a crucial role to play in influencing international diplomacy and fostering global partnerships.
Also present at the event were representatives of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Nigeria, including Head of Office Mr. Moritz Sprenker and Programme Manager Mr. Samson Adeniran, who contributed to discussions on governance and international cooperation.
A major highlight of the visit was a lecture on the “4 D’s” of Nigeria’s foreign policy framework Democracy, Diaspora, Development, and Demography delivered by Barr. Ijeoma Anele. The session provided students with deeper insight into how Nigeria positions itself within the global system through governance, economic growth, and population strength.
The excursion also featured an engaging session with researcher Mr. Haruna Lawrence, who introduced the Concentric Circle Theory, strategic model guiding Nigeria’s foreign relations. He explained that the approach prioritises Nigeria’s neighbours, followed by the ECOWAS sub region, Africa, and the wider global community, in line with constitutional provisions promoting African unity. The visit concluded with a tour of the NIIA Library, established in 1963, renowned as a repository of diplomatic knowledge and international archives.
