Chief Ayiri Emami, the immediate past Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, is a seasoned figure in Delta State politics, possessing substantial influence within the broader political landscape of Nigeria as a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC. His close relationship with President Bola Tinubu has further solidified his standing, enabling him to cultivate extensive political connections and benefit from government patronage over the years.
Historically, Emami has not shied away from controversy. His bold challenges to the status quo were evident when he opposed the installation of Olu Atuwatse III as the successor to his uncle. At the time, Emami publicly expressed his discontent, destroying the nomination letter he had received as head of chiefs and actively working against the Olu’s ascension. He framed his actions as being in the best interest of Warri Kingdom. However, despite his efforts, Olu Atuwatse III was coronated amid widespread celebration, gaining strong support across the kingdom, which has only deepened over time. Under his leadership, Olu Ogiame Atuwatse III has fostered a renewed sense of pride and accomplishment within Warri Kingdom, undertaking significant initiatives that have elevated its profile.
In a bid to strengthen ties with his palace chiefs, Olu Atuwatse III initiated a process for all palace chiefs to revalidate their chieftaincy titles. Chief Ayiri, however, chose to disregard this invitation, a decision that ultimately led to his title as Ologbotsere (Traditional Prime Minister) being stripped from him. The honor was then conferred upon Chief (Engr) Oritsema Oma Eyewuoma, whose appointment was recognized as a prudent decision by the Olu, especially since Emami had failed to revalidate his title.

After a series of appeals from his supporters and various deliberations, Emami eventually sought to pay homage to Ogiame Atuwatse III. Unfortunately for him, by that time, the title of Ologbotsere had already been awarded to another individual. Although Ayiri attempted to negotiate with the king for the restoration of his title, the Olu indicated that Emami would need to prove himself worthy to ascend once again within the hierarchical structure of the kingdom. In a gesture of goodwill, the Olu offered Ayiri the title of Eyeku, a title previously held by his late father, but Emami refused this offer, choosing instead to remain assertively attached to his former title.
The ramifications of Emami’s continued self-identification as Ologbotsere have sparked considerable discourse within the community. Critics argue that his actions undermine the authority of the Olu’s stool, suggesting that Ayiri’s refusal to humbly adjust his attitude and accept his current standing reflects a larger issue of ego. Despite the Olu’s clear pronouncement, Emami persists in his stance, seemingly convinced that his wealth and political connections exempt him from being held accountable for his choices.
This past week, when First Lady Remi Tinubu visited Warri Kingdom, Ayiri was present to greet her upon her arrival, highlighting his enduring prominence in local affairs. However, in what seemed a conscious decision to avoid confrontation, he did not attend the official welcoming ceremony for the First Lady at the palace, instead waiting outside until the event concluded. His presence outside rather than inside the palace has led many to speculate about when he might reconcile with the reality of his situation and possibly accept the title offered by the Olu. Yet, Ayiri’s defiance remains apparent, as he continues to rely on his status and connections, seemingly undeterred by the potential consequences of his actions.
