New details have emerged explaining why both Tottenham Hotspur and Galatasaray failed to secure Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman  during the winter transfer window with the decision-making in North London now being described as "costly" amidst a deepening relegation crisis.

Despite being offered the 2024 CAF Player of the Year twice this season, Tottenham—then led by Thomas Frank—opted for caution.

According to reports from Soccernet.ng and The Sun, Spurs turned down Lookman in the summer due to his initial preference for Inter Milan, but remarkably passed again in January when the player was available.

At the time, Spurs were navigating a nightmare injury list including Richarlison, Mohammed Kudus, and Dominic Solanke. Rather than securing the Atalanta talisman, Sporting Director Johan Lange defended the club’s inactivity as a refusal to sign "quick fixes."

The irony was not lost on fans as Spurs instead spent nearly €40 million on Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid—the very move that provided the Spanish side the funds and squad space to sign Lookman on February 1st .

While Spurs struggle to find the net, Lookman has become the heartbeat of Diego Simeone’s new-look Atlético. In just seven games, the 28-year-old has notched 4 goals and 2 assists, including a Man of the Match performance in a 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.

It wasn't just London where Lookman was a missed opportunity. Super-agent George Gardi—the man who brought Victor Osimhen to Istanbul—revealed he attempted to replicate that "Osimhen magic" for Galatasaray.

"I tried to replicate the loan-plus-option formula with Lookman twice," Gardi told TuttoSport. "In the summer, he preferred to stay in Italy. In January, Atalanta’s demands simply skyrocketed beyond our reach."

With a gauntlet of fixtures against Liverpool, Chelsea, and Aston Villa looming, the decision to pass on a proven match-winner like Lookman may well be the moment that ends Tottenham's 48-year top-flight residency. For the Spurs faithful, "market discipline" is beginning to feel a lot like surrender.
