Kano has been embroiled in a protracted emirate dispute. Muhammadu Sanusi II was appointed Emir of Kano during the administration of former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso but was dethroned under the government of Abdullahi Ganduje, who subsequently appointed Aminu Ado Bayero. Ganduje also created four additional first-class emirates.
In May 2024, the Yusuf administration dethroned Bayero and reinstated Sanusi II, invoking the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, which dissolved the five emirate councils established by Ganduje, including the Kano emirate.
Bayero has declined to vacate the palace, maintaining that he remains the legitimate Emir. The development has led to a standoff between supporters of both camps. Conflicting court orders have further complicated the matter, with some rulings favouring Sanusi II and others backing Bayero. The dispute has triggered protests and heightened tensions in the state.
Governor Yusuf expressed optimism that the crisis would soon be resolved. He spoke during the second special prayer session and Qur’anic recitation held at the Government House, Kano, where 4,444 reciters gathered.
He stated that the fervent prayers offered during the session would pave the way for an amicable resolution of the emirate dispute in a manner acceptable to all parties.

The governor pledged to promote unity among political actors in the state, urging them to shun divisive politics and embrace mutual respect. He also reiterated his administration’s resolve to eradicate thuggery, noting that youths involved in such activities should instead channel their energies toward constructive engagement and development.
Yusuf assured residents that his government would continue to implement projects with direct impact on their welfare and commended the Qur’anic reciters for their commitment to the state’s stability and progress.
In his remarks, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin lauded the governor for initiating the unity prayer programme and encouraged other states to adopt similar initiatives to foster peace and national cohesion.
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, urged residents to remain steadfast in prayers for the continued advancement of Kano State and the country.
