Obasanjo’s Tinubu branding

The irony was lost on most, not the least the Ebora Owu himself!
Ex-President, Olusegun Obasanjo, turned out decked in an “adire” gown, with Tinubu’s broken chains trademark crawling all over it – the same “cheeky” Tinubu, as Lagos governor, Baba Iyabo couldn’t stick as president; and certainly that same one that helped to run Obasanjo’s bumbling PDP out of power, before becoming president of the Federal Republic in 2023!
That virtual impossible turned possible at the runway of the Gateway International Cargo Airport, Ilisan, Ogun State. President Tinubu had bowed, according to news reports: “Baba, I’m loyal!” The Ebora Owu had responded with no less zest: “I’m more loyal, my President!” Meanwhile, former Governor Olusegun Osoba, of that same Ogun State, would add Baba’s trendy pair of shoes to the bonhomie. Given Baba’s avant-garde shoes, Ogun harbours no outdated oldie!

Was that vignette real, though? Or was it some pleasant apparition too good to be true? It might be too good, to be sure. But certainly, it was true!

So, why would the normally grumpy Obasanjo, whose reflex is to tamp down others after him – he harbours that deep phobia of successors out-shining him, with his humongous appetite for fault-finding – suddenly turn so debonair and charitable?
Perhaps in President Bola Tinubu’s case, it is he that God has blessed no one can curse? Or that beatitude from the scriptures: your bitterest foes turning your lead praise singers?
Or could it be that at his much vaunted “departure lounge”, Obasanjo is turning a new leaf? Instead of his paranoia-induced malice, has he decided on beaming friendship and charity to all? That would be great, if so! After all, as the scriptures say, God doesn’t want the sinner to perish! He rather craves sinner repentance to secure salvation!

Indeed, for Obasanjo, his politics and his legacy, it’s not the best of times. The PDP that he had weaponized into a brutal machine to subdue political opponents, inside and outside, is crumbled by sheer hubris – that same hubris Obasanjo himself epitomized as its “leader” in his presidential years.
The ADC, another PDP faction but which Obasanjo had pushed as a “third force” in 2019, is proving a near-stillbirth, after mainly Obasanjo-era power prodigals tried to forcefully take it from its original owners. The courts are now determining the true owners of the party right now.
But perhaps Baba Iyabo’s greatest self-rebuke is that his daughter, the rather polite Iyabo, craves to be Ogun governor. But she wouldn’t even touch her father’s old PDP, the one that propelled her to the Senate in 2003, with a long pole!
Days after the Gateway Airport drama, Iyabo surfaced at President Tinubu’s Ikoyi home! The gospel: her gubernatorial ambition! Might all the Ebora Owu drama at Ilisan be about paving the way for her daughter? You never know! But it sure looks like the typical Obasanjo-esque crass entitlement!
