Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed yesterday finally called it quits with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and immediately joined the Allied People’s Movement (APM) ahead of the 2027 elections .
He plans to return to the Senate on the ticket of his new party.
Mohammed was received into the APM by its national chairman, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, at a ceremony in Bauchi.
Prior to switching to the APM, Mohammed had considered joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) whose representatives he met at different times.
But it appears he was unable to reach an acceptable agreement with the ADC and APC for him to join either of them.
He moved into the APM with his commissioners, special advisers and the majority of PDP officials in the state moments after a stakeholders meeting on what he called the extraordinary and complex political situation in the country.
He was later registered and issued his membership card by Dantalle.
He said he moved with his full political structure from ward to state level.
Mohammed said efforts to resolve the crisis in the PDP, including consultations in Abuja, failed to yield the desired results, particularly after the Supreme Court judgement nullified the November 2025 Ibadan National Convention of the party.
“After careful consideration and wide consultations, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not yielded the desired results,” he said.
He, however, appreciated the PDP for its role in his political journey.
“We remain grateful for this history and the opportunities provided,” he said.
The governor explained that his decision to join the APM was aimed at providing a credible and stable platform for his supporters in next year’s elections.
“The APM offers us a viable platform to organise effectively, mobilise our supporters, and present a credible alternative,” he said.
He added that the party is not encumbered by legal disputes that could hinder its activities.
Mohammed also announced measures to ensure a smooth transition, including the establishment of a compliance committee, commencement of online membership registration, engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and mobilisation at the grassroots.
He said members of the State Executive Council intending to contest elective positions have resigned their appointments.
Dantalle commended the governor for choosing the APM.
He assured him and his supporters of the party’s readiness to work with them and said the party is litigation free.
“As long as it is about integrity, sacrifice and service, that is what defines political parties,” he said.
Speaking separately to BBC Hausa Service, the governor declared his intention to contest the Bauchi South senatorial seat in 2027 following the invitation from the people of the senatorial district to do so.
“They have put their hope in me, and as long as I am alive and healthy, I feel it is my duty to accept their call and serve.”
He was first elected into the senate from the same district in 2007 on the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
In April 2010, he was appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and left the ANPP for the PDP shortly after.
The APM was registered as a political party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in August 2018 and had its first baptism of fire during the 2019 election when the then Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun deployed it as strategic vehicle for his loyalists to contest the governorship election in the state.
