Weeks back,  the cheering at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval was deafening as Nigeria’s  women cricketers lifted the Patricia Kambarami Cup. By beating Rwanda in a thrilling final, they proved they are the new queens of the pitch.

But for one man in the stands, the victory was deeply personal. Bobby Kambarami wasn’t just watching a match; he was watching his late wife’s dream come to life. The trophy being held high by the Nigerian team carried her name.

Patricia Kambarami was a superwoman of African cricket. As a leader for the ICC, she spent her life working to ensure countries like Nigeria would one day rise to the top. When she passed away in May 2024 at age 65, the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) led by Dr.  Uyi  Akpata , honoured her by naming this 5-nation  invitational tournament after her.

Watching Nigeria defeat Rwanda to claim the gold, Bobby felt his wife’s spirit in the celebration.

"Her dream was to see African countries break into the top circle of world cricket," Bobby told  reporters. "Seeing what has happened here, I know that dream is coming true."

Bobby and Patricia were married for 45 years and raised three children. Yet, sitting in Lagos, Bobby admitted that seeing how Nigeria loved his wife gave him a fresh perspective on her life.

"You live with someone for four decades and you think you know them," Bobby reflected. "But now I see what she did for others and her drive to make this game succeed. I realize now there was something very special about her that went beyond being a lovely wife."

He shared a moment of honesty that many can relate to: "I sometimes think of things I should have done, like taking her out for dinner more often. I miss her, but I am so proud of the legacy she left behind."

Bobby made the trip from Zimbabwe with the blessing of his children, who told him, "Dad, go and represent Mom."

The Nigerian hosts ensured he felt like family. Between matches, Bobby explored Lagos, falling in love with the city’s energy and even the local slang. "I love the Pidgin English... *Oga, Oga!* I love it," he laughed, promising to return to Nigeria soon.

As the Nigerian team celebrated their hard-fought win, the tournament ended exactly how Patricia Kambarami would have wanted: with African women playing world-class cricket and a stadium full of passion.

Nigeria didn't just win a trophy; they proved that Patricia’s lifework was a success. For Bobby, leaving Lagos with the "Patricia Cup" in Nigerian hands was the ultimate tribute. He returns home knowing his wife’s name lives on in every run scored and every wicket taken on the continent she loved.
