A young man once boasted of his knowledge of Scripture. He could quote verses with precision, lead prayers in public, and even serve in church leadership. Yet in his daily life, he was harsh with family, impatient with neighbors, and quick to judge. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13:1 cut through any illusion of spiritual accomplishment: “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.”

Christianity is more than knowledge, eloquence, or religious performance. At its heart, it is about love—divine, sacrificial, patient, and enduring love. Without love, all other expressions of faith are empty noise. This Lenten season calls believers to examine not only what they do in church but how they live outside its walls.

Love is the first evidence of true faith. John 13:34–35 reminds us, “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” Love identifies the Christian. It is active, visible, and practical. It is in the forgiveness we extend, the patience we practice, and the compassion we show to those in need.

Love is patient and kind. It does not envy, boast, or seek selfish gain. 1 Corinthians 13:4–5 teaches that love “suffereth long, and is kind; envieth not; vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil.” The Christian’s daily interactions, whether in family, work, or society, reveal the quality of their love.

Love is enduring and forgiving. Colossians 3:13 exhorts, “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” Christianity is not about holding grudges, retaliating, or seeking recognition. It is about reflecting the heart of Christ in every relationship.

Love is selfless and sacrificial. Romans 5:8 reminds us, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” True love is willing to give, serve, and bear cost for the sake of others. It is not calculated, convenient, or conditional—it is active and transformative.

Love motivates obedience. 1 John 4:7–8 teaches that “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” Every act of worship, prayer, fasting, or service must flow from a heart anchored in love. Knowledge, spiritual gifts, and even miracles are meaningless without love, for love gives them eternal value.

At this Lenten season dear brothers and sisters in Christ, please evaluate the condition of your heart. Let love guide your words, actions, and decisions. Serve without expectation, forgive without hesitation, and reflect the selfless love of Christ in every encounter. True Christianity is recognized not by power, position, or performance, but by love that transforms lives and communities. May love be seen in all of your ways, works and talks in the name of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Lord, fill our hearts with Your love, that it may flow through us to others, shaping our lives, our families, and our communities in the image of Christ, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
