A Belgium-based social enterprise, Digital African Women (DAW), has supported more than 6,000 African and European migrant entrepreneurs to establish and expand businesses, while advocating for policies that enhance women’s economic participation and safeguard their rights.

The organisation, co-financed by the European Union, focuses on empowering African women across Europe and Africa through targeted interventions.

Founder, HRM Khadijat Abdulkadir, disclosed this during the organisation’s International Women’s Day event themed “Accelerate Her Power: Rights. Justice. Action,” held recently in Lagos.

She explained that the initiative equips women with job-ready skills, financial literacy, and digital tools, enabling them to secure employment, advance their careers, and attain financial independence.

Abdulkadir noted that the platform was designed to address the persistent challenges faced by many African women in the diaspora, where significant talent often lacks access to opportunities, capital, and institutional support.

She reiterated that since its inception, the organisation has continued to support thousands of migrant entrepreneurs while promoting policies that strengthen women’s economic inclusion and protect their rights.

Speaking on the significance of International Women’s Day, the founder said the occasion goes beyond celebration, describing it as a movement rooted in the pursuit of justice, fair wages, inclusive participation, and women’s rights.

According to her, the freedoms enjoyed today result from the resilience and determination of those who challenged existing systems, stressing the need to sustain and build on those achievements.

"International Women’s Day was never only about celebration. “It began as a movement for justice, for fair wages, for participation, and for the right of women to shape the societies they live in.

"The freedoms we experience today were secured through the courage and persistence of those who challenged the status quo. Our responsibility now is to protect those gains and build upon them," she said.
