In the professional football circuit, the path to the top is rarely a straight line. While many Nigerian talents gravitate toward the familiar hubs of Europe, Prince Clifford known for his trickery on the ball, is proving that the road to greatness can lead through unconventional territories.
Currently leading the line for St. Mary’s Sports Club in Jaffna, the Nigerian youngster is carving out a reputation in the heart of a cricket-obsessed nation.
Leaving home to pursue a professional career is a gamble that requires a mix of sacrifice and for Clifford, the move to the Sri Lankan league was more than just a change of scenery; it was a test of his tactical and mental flexibility.

"My journey so far has been a mix of hard work, sacrifice, and growth," Clifford, who is currently holidaying in Nigeria told NationSport. "Adapting to different environments, cultures, and styles of play has improved my understanding of the game. Every challenge I’ve faced has made me stronger."
The switch to St. Mary’s mid-season presented immediate hurdles. Transitioning into a new system and a different style of football required discipline. However, Clifford found his rhythm, finishing the campaign on a positive note and establishing himself as a vital cog in the team's offensive engine.
Sri Lanka is a nation where cricket is king, yet Clifford, has discovered a pocket of footballing fire in the northern city of Jaffna. The relationship between the Nigerian star and the local supporters has become one of the most compelling narratives of his season.

According to the Edo State-born youngster, the devotion of the St. Mary’s faithful is evidenced by their gruelling travel schedule.
"The fans, especially from Jaffna, are very passionate about football ," Clifford, revealed. " For instance, they travel in several buses for about 10 hours just to watch our games in Colombo."

That level of support has indeed fuelled his adaptation and provided a reminder of the global reach of the Nigerian football brand.
Despite his breakthrough in the Asian circuit, Clifford, views his current stint as a sharpening stone for bigger stages.
"I still have a lot I want to achieve," he stated. "One of my biggest dreams is to consistently represent my country at the senior level. I want to test myself against the best in the top leagues and leave a legacy that young players can look up to."
