Worried by the dwindling supply of electricity to many Delta homes and businesses, the State Government on Wednesday met with the management of Transcorp Power Limited PLC, Ughelli Power Plant, for a possible partnership to strengthen power supply across the State.

The realisation will drive industrial growth and improve living standards.

Leading the state delegation was the Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Michael Anoka. Both parties explored practical frameworks to harness available generation capacity for the benefit of residents and businesses.

Anoka said the engagement formed part of the government’s broader fact-finding and stakeholder consultations aimed at maximizing power assets within the state in line with the development vision of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

He emphasised the critical role of electricity in economic development.

“Power is central to economic expansion and social development. Without steady electricity, businesses struggle, investments decline, and opportunities are limited. The Delta State Government is committed to working closely with key power sector players to unlock the full potential of energy infrastructure located within our state,” Anoka stated.

The Commissioner also inspected facilities at the Ughelli plant to assess its operational capacity and ongoing expansion projects.

The plant, operated by Transcorp Power, has an installed capacity of 900 megawatts (MW), with plans to add 120MW, positioning it as a strategic asset capable of supplying electricity to Ughelli, Isoko, and other parts of the state, subject to improved transmission and distribution coordination.

Managing Director of Transcorp Power, Ughelli, Engr. Peter Ikenga, assured the Ministry of Energy of the company’s readiness to collaborate with the state government.

He said that with the right partnership framework and support, the plant could deliver a more stable and expanded electricity supply beyond its host communities.

Ikenga added that enhanced cooperation could improve power delivery to key economic hubs, including Asaba, boosting commercial activities, attracting investments, and strengthening critical public infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and government facilities.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to sustained engagement with industry stakeholders to ensure Delta State maximizes its energy potential for sustainable development.

The Commissioner and his team also visited the Transmission Company of Nigeria Delta Sub-Region in Ughelli as part of efforts to strengthen coordination across the generation and transmission segments of the power value chain.
