The immediate past chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, Mr. Fuad Atanda-Lawal, has flagged off the reconstruction of the Army Children’s School and Dodan Barracks Primary School in Obalende.
Atanda-Lawal said the project, executed through his Fuad Atanda-Lawal Foundation, reflected his commitment to providing a conducive learning environment for pupils in the area.
Speaking at the ceremony on Tuesday, he recalled attending the school 38 years ago and noted that local governments alone cannot meet growing community needs.
“Every child, regardless of background, deserves access to quality basic education for a peaceful and prosperous society.
“This was my school 38 years ago. I excelled and even earned a double promotion because I was ahead.
“The local government alone cannot do all things. We must complement efforts to improve education and living standards.
“We want children withdrawn from costly private schools to access free, quality education here. That is the vision behind this project.
“A child we fail to train today may become a burden to society tomorrow. This initiative is therefore imperative,” he said.
Atanda-Lawal said his administration prioritised partnerships with individuals and organisations to drive development across the LCDA.
“We are using our goodwill for the people, to empower them and make life easier for the average person,” he said.
He disclosed plans to sponsor teacher training in West Africa, subject to approval by the State Universal Basic Education Board.
The former chairman urged residents to support the current administration to ensure continuity in developmental programmes.
He said the schools would feature modern facilities, be completed within 18 months, and serve neighbouring schools in the community.
The LASUBEB Chairman, Mr. Hakeem Shittu, said the government welcomes genuine collaboration to improve education service delivery.
Shittu commended Atanda-Lawal, noting such initiatives are uncommon among former public office holders.
“Many believe politicians only take from the government and never give back. This project proves otherwise,” he said.
He described the effort as a new dimension in public service and urged other leaders to emulate the gesture.
“Government cannot do it all. Collaboration like this adds immense value to society,” Shittu said.
Shittu warned that parents who deny children access to education would face consequences under existing laws.
Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA Chairman, Mr. Bola Oladunjoye, praised his predecessor and pledged to safeguard the schools upon completion.
Lagos State Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Rotimi Akodu, described Atanda-Lawal as a worthy ambassador committed to humanity.
Responding, Brig.-Gen. Ai Getso, the Garrison Commander, Nigerian Army Division, said the initiative supports the welfare of military families.
Getso was represented by Maj. Sunday Maikasiwa, acting commanding officer, Army Battalion.
“Education is the foundation of a progressive society. A conducive environment is essential for effective learning.
“This initiative will create opportunities for the children. We appreciate the foundation and look forward to completion,” Getso said.
The Head Teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Alabi, expressed gratitude, saying pupils eagerly anticipate improved classrooms that will enhance learning outcomes.
