The Federal Government has announced the successful connection of nine underserved Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the country with broadband connectivity to ensure that reliable internet access reached various communities within them.

The feat was achieved through Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) and the connectivity would benefit scores of rural dwellers, providing access to internet services and exposure to digital marketing and empowerment.

The project forms part of project 774 aimed at strengthening national digital infrastructure and promoting inclusive access across Nigeria.

Following the appointment of Prof Ibrahim Adeyanju as Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone Limited by President Bola Tinubu two years ago, there has been tremendous transformation in the digital ecosystem with Galaxy Backbone playing critical roles.

According to a statement signed by Galaxy Backbone Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Chidi Okpala, the transformation in digital space cuts across Nigeria university environment, airports and government institutions.

“This initiative extends digital access to communities that previously lacked reliable internet. It reflects our ongoing mission to build Nigeria’s digital backbone and support socio-economic development,” Okpala said.

Okpala highlighted GBB’s partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), which has strengthened Nigeria’s national fibre backbone, improved redundancy, and enabled scalable broadband expansion to more states and underserved communities.

Speaking further on the achievements of Prof Adeyanju, Mr Okpala said: “Beyond infrastructure, Galaxy Backbone has enhanced sovereign digital capabilities through the 1Government Cloud platform, supporting Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) with secure hosting and shared services.

“The locally developed GovMail solution now serves over 100,000 federal civil servants.

“Other upgrades include cybersecurity monitoring, co-location services, and data centre operations, while the Service Desk now operates 24/7 to support stakeholders nationwide.

“Over the past two years, our work has expanded digital inclusion, strengthened infrastructure, and improved service delivery. The broadband rollout to nine LGAs is a testament to our commitment to connecting communities and building a digitally inclusive Nigeria.”

He said the company has earned over 20 national and international awards in recognition of its innovation, service delivery, and contributions to Nigeria’s digital transformation.

While expressing the commitment of Galaxy Backbone to Nigeria’s digital transformation under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, Mr Chidi also commended the support and guidance of the Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani for the success of the agency.

He assured that Galaxy Backbone would remain committed to expanding connectivity, strengthening cybersecurity, and building a resilient digital foundation for the country’s future.

Okpala listed some of the landmark achievements of Prof Adeyanju within the past two years as the completion of Fibre-to-Hostel projects at the University of Lagos, University of Abuja, and University of Jos.

He said the development created enhanced research and digital learning environments for students and the entire university communities.

“Strategic national assets, such as the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Federal Secretariats, were also connected to improve operational efficiency and service delivery,” he said.
