There was excitement and cautious hope in the air in Asaba, Delta State capital, at the weekend, as residents gathered to witness what many believed could mark a new chapter for their community.

From roadside traders to young job seekers, conversations centred on one question: will this Cubana Millennium City Project finally bring real opportunities closer to home?

That question gained momentum as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori inaugurated the prototype of the project, developed by Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, in the state.

For many community members, the event was not just about dignitaries or speeches; it was about what the project could mean for everyday life.

Some residents expressed hope that the development would bring jobs for artisans, security work, and small business opportunities, while others looked forward to better roads and increased economic activities in surrounding neighbourhoods.

“I just want to see something that will help the youth,” one attendee said, echoing a common sentiment among those present.

The inauguration, which coincided with Iyiegbu’s 51st birthday anniversary, attracted a large gathering of dignitaries and guests, including the Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

In his remarks, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori acknowledged earlier doubts about the project’s timeline, but commended its delivery.

The governor described it as proof that big ideas could succeed locally.

He reassured residents that his administration would continue to create a peaceful environment where businesses could grow without disruption.

Oborevwori hailed the investor’s vision and determination, noting the project had moved from a doubtful concept to a visible reality.

He recalled initial skepticism when Iyiegbu first announced plans to inaugurate a prototype within a year, but expressed satisfaction that the vision had materialised.

According to him, the development underscores the importance of supporting private sector investments as a pathway to economic growth.

The governor said his administration remained committed to fostering a peaceful and secure environment that encouraged investors to thrive.

He noted government intervention helped resolve potential land-related disputes in the area, ensuring smooth progress of the project.

Oborevwori highlighted the role of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in driving development, saying Cubana Millennium City aligned with the state’s vision of building liveable, secure and investment-friendly urban centres.

He urged ‘Deltans’, especially those in the diaspora, to take advantage of opportunities at home, describing the project as a “homecoming” initiative that would encourage more people to invest locally rather than abroad.

The governor expressed appreciation to Iyiegbu for naming part of the development after him, assuring investors of the safety of their investments in the state.

Behind the scenes, community leaders noted government intervention helped resolve land-related concerns, allowing work to progress smoothly—something many say is often a challenge in such developments.

Speaking to the crowd, Iyiegbu described the project as a personal dream and a call for Nigerians, especially those abroad, to invest back home.

He credited the support of the host community as a key factor in bringing the project to life.

He described the initiative as a “bring it back home” vision aimed at promoting investment in Delta State.

He said despite widespread doubt about the project’s feasibility within the set timeline, the support from Delta State Government, host communities, and other stakeholders made its realisation possible.

Iyiegbu lauded the peaceful and investor-friendly environment in the state, stressing that there were no disruptions from government agencies throughout the construction process.

He described the prototype building as a world-class edifice delivered within record time and expressed confidence that the larger Millennium City project would compete globally.

He encouraged investors to consider Delta State as a prime destination, reiterating that the state offers a conducive climate for genuine business ventures.

While the full impact of the Millennium City is yet to unfold, many in Asaba say they are watching closely and hoping this is not just another promise, but a real step toward lasting change.
