Actor and producer, Daniel Etim Effiong has revealed how his dad was falsely tried for alleged treason and coup to overthrow ex-head of state General Ibrahim Babangida.

Daniel, who was a guest on a podcast, also revealed that his mom lost her life during the struggle.

He said, although he was only a kid when his dad’s ordeal started, he, however, learned about it through a book authored by his dad telling his personal story.

“I was one year old when he was arrested and tried for treasonable offenses and coup against President Ibrahim Babangida,” Effiong narrated.

“His closest friend in the army had told him of plans that he had to kick Babangida out of power so the big question for him was should he tell on his friend or should he not and when his best friend was arrested, he was asked who he told and he mentioned my dad. Of course my dad was arrested, tried and sentenced to death by firing squad and miraculously he survived that ordeal. He was eventually released in 1993 before Babangida left power. His turning point however came in 2020 during President Buhari’s tenure when the ex-president gave a presidential pardon.

“In 2020, President Buhari officially granted him presidential pardon, his restoration of rank and entitlement. So all that gratuity was granted to him.”
