Among the ancient Greek philosophers, there were two that stood out for the early interest they took in the nature of life and their divergent views of the world. The first, Permenades, was of the view that the world is static because anything that really is cannot come into being or pass away. It must be unchanging and complete.

His opposite number, Heraclitus, however, believed that the world is in perpetual flux, and the only thing that is realistic in life is change. It would, therefore, seem that the popular saying that no condition is permanent derived largely from Heraclitus' view of life.

Unfortunately, this important point is lost on many people who tend to forget that whatever position they occupy in life is transient. And one of them is a former vice president who at the point of his appointment was like the apple of the eyes of his boss who literally handed him control over the nation's assets.

Unfortunately, he misused the opportunity and was stripped of the power, influence and privileges that got him intoxicated. At some point, his boss virtually declared him a persona non grata. Shunned by his boss and snubbed by his underlings, he became a lonely and isolated figure, holed up in his office all day.

A visitor to his office in those trying times recalled how his boss added insult to his injury over the appointment of the boss of one of the critical revenue-generating agencies of the federal government; a responsibility previously handled by the deputy before he was stripped of power. So when his boss sent him the names of two nominees who incidentally were from his state and asked him to pick his preferred candidate, the deputy thought he had regained his boss' trust and hurriedly indicated the one he preferred for the position.

To his shock, however, the deputy's choice had been thrown out by the time the announcement was made. It then occurred to him that the battle had just begun. The only reason his boss sought his input was to make sure that his preferred candidate did not occupy the coveted seat.
