Iran and the US have agreed to a two-week ceasefire, and talks to finalize a peace deal will begin in Pakistan on Friday.

The decision comes with pledges for the resumption of operations in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

The EU and UN also welcomed the truce, as did other countries.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called on all parties to respect the ceasefire to “pave the way toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.”

Gulf countries also welcomed the ceasefire, hoping it could lead to a permanent settlement.
