A Nigerian researcher working at a leading agricultural research institute in France, Dr. Mubarak Mahmud, has developed a new biological pathway that could help convert nitrogen from the air into natural fertiliser for cereal crops, a breakthrough that could significantly improve global food production.

The innovation focuses on harnessing atmospheric nitrogen and transforming it into a form that plants can utilise, potentially reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers while improving soil health and crop productivity.

Nitrogen is one of the most essential nutrients required for plant growth. However, most cereal crops, such as maize, wheat, and rice, cannot naturally utilise nitrogen from the atmosphere, forcing farmers to depend heavily on synthetic fertilisers.

Mahmud's work aims to address this challenge by introducing a biological mechanism that enables plants to access nitrogen directly from the air, a process that could improve yields and lower the environmental impact associated with chemical fertiliser use.

Agricultural scientists say the discovery could have major implications for cereal production, particularly in developing countries where the high cost of fertiliser remains a major barrier to food security.

Experts note that enabling crops to derive nutrients naturally from atmospheric nitrogen could also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to fertiliser manufacturing and excessive application in farming systems.

The development is expected to support efforts by global agricultural institutions to promote climate-smart farming practices and sustainable food production systems.

Researchers say further trials and field applications will be required before the innovation can be widely deployed across farming systems, but early findings suggest it could represent a significant step toward more sustainable cereal production.
