The Inspector-General of Police (IG), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, yesterday said the just-graduated 1,068 armed Constables would be deployed in the grassroots for improved security.
He stated this at the passing out of the Constables in Akwa Ibom State, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to strengthening operational capacity and discipline nationwide.
The constables underwent intensive firearms and tactical training conducted, in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Government, to enhance crime prevention and community policing at the grassroots.
The exercise marked the first time newly recruited constables were authorised to carry firearms immediately after training, a shift from the previous practice where officers waited several years before being armed.
The IG charged senior officers to mentor the new recruits and ensure their conduct reflected the values and integrity of the police. He also warned Commissioners of Police (CPs) nationwide to take full responsibility for officers under their commands, stressing that they would be held accountable for their subordinates’ actions.
The police chief condemned the conduct of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) involved in a recent incident in Delta State, saying the officer had been dismissed and would be prosecuted.
He warned that any officer who violates Force Order 237 on the use of firearms would face dismissal and prosecution, urging officers to remain professional and responsible in the discharge of their duties because discipline was essential to effective policing.
IG Disu commended the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police for his exemplary leadership and noted that the state was the first in the country to issue certificates to the newly trained constables. He also appreciated the state government for its continued support to the police, assuring residents of improved protection of lives and property.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6, praised the IG for attending the ceremony and commended the Commissioners of Police in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states for their cooperation. He lauded the IG’s decisive handling of the Delta State incident.
The training programme covered arms drill, tactical movement, vehicle interception, counter-ambush operations, movement under fire, weapon handling and maintenance, combat craft and dry shooting exercises.
