The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2023 general elections, Barrister Adewole Adebayo, has made a case for policy reforms that will bridge the gap between Nigerians and those on the corridor of power.

He made the call Friday night at an Iftar gathering hosted by his wife, Lilian Adebayo in Abuja.

The former presidential candidate argued that the true strength of the country's democracy lies not in its political machinery, but in the active engagement of its people.

He urged political institutions to dismantle barriers that currently stifle democratic legitimacy.

Drawing a parallel between faith and public service, Adebayo noted that the lessons of the holy month of Ramadan—specifically humility and accountability—should serve as a moral compass for the nation’s leaders.

"The spiritual significance of Ramadan, particularly the emphasis on humility and accountability, should guide the conduct of political leaders and public officials," Adebayo stated.

He then stressed that Nigeria’s inherent diversity is an asset that must be harnessed to foster a more just society, adding: "Nigeria’s religious and cultural diversity remains a major strength and should inspire leaders to promote justice, tolerance, and national unity.”

Adebayo also emphasised the need for an environment that actively welcomes voters rather than alienating them. He argued that without robust participation, the democratic process loses its moral authority.

"Voter participation is essential for democratic legitimacy," he stressed, urging institutions to create frameworks that "encourage Nigerians to actively participate in elections."

Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, echoed Adebayo’s concerns regarding participation.

He specifically criticised certain electoral provisions, such as indirect primaries and mandatory NIN requirements, which he argued could "potentially limit broader participation in politics."

The gathering concluded with a collective call for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain strict adherence to rules, ensuring that the high expectations of the Nigerian public are met in future polls.
