The Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle (aka Sego), has presented Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) to 36 State Executive Members, six cars to staff and two Mini Buses (Korope) to female drivers.

The event held at the union’s Secretariat in Agege yesterday, witnessed dignitaries such as the Lagos State Commissioner of the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab,  Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Grassroots and Sports Development, Anthony Adeyinka; Elegushi of Ikateland Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi; Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-ghaniyu Obasa; Lagos State  Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Cornelius Ojelabi, amongst others.

State Secretary of Lagos NURTW, Usman Teslim, said the Adekunle’s administration had demonstrated passion to improve union members’ welfare.

He added that the various initiatives under the administration had answered those who kept asking what the union was using the dues being collected for.

He recounted Adekunle’s achievement to include the distribution of N1.5 million each across 17 branches of the union in March 2025; N1.5 million to 26 relatives of the union’s branch executives in last December and opening of a modern park in February 2026.

Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Sola Giwa, said the  initiative was not only one of a kind but was not new to people who knew Adekunle  as a welfarist.

He added that the Lagos State Government would continue to give the necessary support to the union.

“Before, NURTW is only known to be full of touts, but the story has changed for now. NURTW is being ascribed to President Tinubu and we must ensure we do not tarnish his image. Branch and Unit chairmen must be good to all to garner more support for the President,” he said.

Adeyinka said President Tínubu was happy with the various life-changing initiatives and peace under Adekunle’s administration.

He urged the members to unite and avoid social media wars

Former Lagos State Chairman of NURTW, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, while commending Adekunle for improving the lives of members since his inauguration, said the initiative was a testament to his faithful and selfless leadership.

He added that the union’s resources  was being utilised to benefit  members “through the  construction  of  modern motor park at Ebute Metta,  welfare package for members, financial support for families of late chairmen  and now palliatives  for 4,000 drivers and presentation of SUVs to members of executives have laid a strong foundation for our union in the state.”

Ojelabi, who described the initiative as a form of support to President Tínubu, said tiers of government have been receiving increased revenue since he took over power.

Chairman of Lagos State Chapter of Nigerian Labour Congress, Funmi Sesi, called on the Federal and Lagos State Governments to support NURTW’s effort by giving them  5,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses with 10 years repayment plan.

“The government has the capacity to buy buses for the Lagos State NURTW because Lagos is a highly populated state. We also urge Governor Sanwo-Olu to support the drivers with palliative to cushion the effect of the Middle East War. NURTW has been supporting you and has promised to keep supporting you,” she said.

Obasa commended the leadership of the Lagos State NURTW describing its achievements as unprecedented within the association.

He said the administration has not only significantly improved members’ welfare and working conditions, but has also foster unity and cooperation among workers across the state.

He added that past internal conflicts were now behind the union, stressing that members were working together in support of progress and improved transportation in Lagos State.
