The leadership crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday worsened as the Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Oyewumi Kamorudeen Olalere, has formally announced his resignation from the party and defection to the Accord Party.

Olarere, who represents Osun West Senatorial District, said his decision followed wide consultations with his constituents and political associates amid what he described as an intractable leadership crisis within the PDP.

In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during the plenary, the lawmaker said the lingering internal wrangling in the party could jeopardise its future and undermine effective representation of his constituents.

He said, “I wish to bring to the attention of the Senate my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party due to the intractable leadership crisis rocking the party, which may jeopardise its progress.”

The senator added that after extensive consultations with stakeholders in his constituency, he resolved to join the Accord Party in order to continue providing effective representation.

“Subsequently, after very wide consultations with my constituents and political associates, I have decided to join the Accord Party to ensure the effective representation of my people,” he said.

Olalere also expressed appreciation to members of the PDP for the opportunity to serve under the party’s platform.

“I wish to register my profound gratitude to the then PDP members for the opportunity afforded me to serve at this level. I promise to continue to do my best to uplift my constituency and contribute to the development of Nigeria at large,” he added.

His defection adds to the growing wave of political realignments in the National Assembly amid the lingering crisis within the PDP and shifting alliances ahead of future electoral contests.
