The National Institute for Sports (NIS) is undergoing a major transformation fuelled by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope" agenda for sports.

Speaking in Abuja yesterday, NIS Director-General Comrade Philip Shaibu revealed that the presidency’s unwavering support has been the primary catalyst for modernizing the institute.

Shaibu, who was being honoured with an award from NEWSTAP/SWAN, noted that the current administration views sports not just as recreation, but as a vital engine for economic growth and youth empowerment

"I want to thank President Tinubu for prioritizing the funding of sports as a vehicle to empower our youth, unite the nation, and diversify the economy," he stated, adding that the NIS is fully committed to the presidential mandate of restoring Nigeria to global sporting prominence.

Reflecting on his transition from the Deputy Governorship of Edo State to the NIS, Shaibu dismissed claims that the appointment was a demotion. Instead, he framed it as a call to national service.

"If the President finds you worthy among 200 million Nigerians, who am I to say no? Leadership is defined by impact, not titles," he remarked.

Shaibu admitted that the early days of his tenure were challenging, describing the state of the Institute upon his arrival as a wilderness.

Rather than waiting for federal allocations, he prioritized immediate office renovations to boost staff morale and convened stakeholders to draft a 10-year strategic development plan.

"Sports is a business, but if we put money before structure, we will fail," Shaibu cautioned. "If we put ideas first, we will get it right."

His remarks came as the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and NEWSTAP presented him with  a letter detailing their decision to honour him.

Led by George Aluo, the delegation praised Shaibu’s bold reforms and his previous success in revitalizing the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Edo State, citing his current work as a masterclass in patriotism and institutional growth.

Responding, Shaibu expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as encouragement to stay focused on institutional reforms. He reiterated that the NIS under his leadership would continue to align with the President’s vision of rebuilding Nigeria’s sporting glory through structure, innovation and dedication to national interest.
