Sporting Lagos are on the verge of securing promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) from Conference B of the Nigerian National League (NNL), needing maximum points from their final two fixtures — at home to Rovers FC and away to Osun United — to end a two-year absence from the top flight.

Akwa United, currently leading Conference B with 31 points, remain in contention but face an uphill task. The Promise Keepers must win their remaining game against Solution FC and hope Sporting Lagos drop points if they are to pip their rivals to the promotion slot. Just one point separates the two sides.

The contest has been one of the standout promotion battles in the NNL this season, with both clubs showing consistency and resilience across the campaign. Sporting Lagos have been in particularly sharp form in recent weeks, stringing together victories that have lifted them within touching distance of first place.

Akwa United, meanwhile, have relied on a combination of defensive solidity and clinical finishing to sustain their challenge. But with the mathematics now favouring Sporting Lagos, the pressure falls squarely on the Promise Keepers to win and wait.

With the final round of fixtures set for this weekend, the promotion picture will be settled. Sporting Lagos need only to hold their nerve. For Akwa United, only a win — and a slip from their rivals — will do.
