The Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to grassroots development and inclusive growth with the rollout of an empowerment programme for residents.
The event drew party leaders, stakeholders, market representatives, and residents, many of whom commended the council for the initiative and expressed optimism about its impact on livelihoods within Surulere.
Speaking at the event held at the council secretariat in Surulere, Yusuf described the initiative as a strategic effort to build capacity and improve livelihoods, in line with the programme’s theme, “Building Capacity for Sustainable Growth.”
Addressing a cross-section of beneficiaries, including youths, women, and small business owners, the council boss said the initiative was designed not just as a distribution exercise, but as a deliberate policy to stimulate economic activities and foster self-reliance among residents.
“This empowerment programme is not merely an event—it is a statement of purpose. It reflects our administration’s belief that governance must touch lives, create opportunities, and uplift communities,” Yusuf said.

He noted that empowering residents—particularly young people and women—remains central to achieving sustainable development in the local government, stressing that productive youths and thriving small businesses are critical to economic stability and growth.
The chairman added that the programme fulfills a key campaign promise of his administration to prioritise the welfare of the people by providing tools, resources, and support systems to help beneficiaries start, sustain, and expand their livelihoods.
Yusuf also urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the support provided, emphasizing that empowerment comes with responsibility.
According to him, beneficiaries are expected to grow their ventures and, in turn, extend opportunities to others within the community.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development, noting that deliberate investments would continue to be made in creating platforms that enable young people to harness their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
Highlighting the role of women in economic development, Yusuf acknowledged their contributions to families and local commerce, assuring that his administration would continue to promote initiatives that support women’s growth and inclusion.
He further aligned the programme with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in advancing inclusiveness and expanding opportunities for citizens at the grassroots level.
The chairman assured residents that the empowerment initiative is one of several interventions planned by the council, adding that the local government remains committed to policies that promote sustainable development, shared prosperity, and responsive governance.
Chairman of Conference 57, Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, in his remarks, hailed Yusuf for the gesture.
Olowa, who doubles as the Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), said council chairmen in Lagos State are competing with wonderful projects implementation.
According to him, Lagosians are the major beneficiaries of the healthy competition.
