Nigeria’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has assured the international community that President Bola Tinubu is committed to resolving the country’s long-standing security challenges and addressing what he described as generational grievances.

Speaking during the presentation of his letter of credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Ibrahim conveyed Tinubu’s message of confidence in Nigeria’s ability to overcome insecurity and contribute meaningfully to global peace efforts.

He said the Nigerian government is tackling the root causes of instability, including regional and historical grievances, while strengthening cooperation with international partners to address broader security concerns in West Africa and the Sahel.

Ibrahim also reiterated Nigeria’s support for reforms within the UN system, particularly the push for a permanent African seat on the Security Council. According to him, such a development would mark a “significant historical achievement” and enhance global peace and security, especially across Africa.

On the domestic front, the envoy highlighted key economic reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies, the unification of the foreign exchange system, and tighter monetary policies aimed at curbing inflation. He noted that while the reforms have come with short-term challenges, they are already yielding results.

He said, "Nigeria remains committed to gathering support for addressing security challenges at home, as the government works to resolve regional issues-these are the foundation of security and are connected to broader challenges, including those in the Sahel and West African sub- region."

Ibrahim further stated that Nigeria remains committed to leading global conversations on tax reform, climate action, and the restructuring of the international financial system, particularly at a time of rising global debt pressures.

Addressing global tensions, he referenced the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and emphasised Nigeria’s support for UN-led peace initiatives, including diplomatic engagements and special envoys aimed at de-escalating conflicts.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate with the UN in promoting peace, justice, and economic stability worldwide, stressing that peace remains essential for both national and global prosperity.
