Ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, elders and leaders of the party in Ughelli North Constituency I have adopted the member representing the constituency in the Delta Assembly, Hon. Matthew Omonade, as their consensus candidate for a second term.

The adoption took place on Saturday during an enlarged leadership meeting at the country home of APC founding leader in Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, OON, in Evwreni.

The meeting, attended by top party stakeholders and leaders from the five wards that make up the constituency, was convened to deliberate on the party’s direction ahead of the primaries and to assess the performance of the incumbent lawmaker.

Moving the motion for Omonade’s adoption, Chief Lucky Oghene-Omoru, leader of Ughelli North Federal Ward 2, described the lawmaker’s return to the Delta Assembly as necessary, citing his legislative performance and constituency projects.

According to him, Omonade has distinguished himself through effective representation and impactful grassroots interventions across the constituency.

The motion was seconded by Chief Alfred Onavwa and received unanimous approval when it was put to a voice vote by Hon. Samuel Marierie, effectively positioning Omonade as the sole APC consensus candidate for the constituency ahead of the primaries.

In a separate motion moved by Chief Simon Asite and seconded by the Commissioner representing Ughelli North in DESOPADEC, Hon. Sylvester Ovbije, party leaders expressed appreciation to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what they described as his inclusive leadership style and commitment to internal democracy within the APC.

Another motion, moved by Chief Ekure, former APC Chairman of Ughelli North and seconded by Chief Alice Jegede, commended Olorogun O’tega Emerhor for his leadership of the Ughelli North APC Leadership Council and passed a vote of confidence in his leadership.

Addressing the gathering, Emerhor said the decision to adopt Omonade followed wide consultations across the constituency and reflected the collective desire of party leaders to reward performance and ensure continuity.

“I called this meeting in my capacity as Chairman of the Ughelli North APC Leadership Council and the de facto leader of Constituency I,” Emerhor stated. “The five wards that make up Ughelli North Constituency I are represented here.”

He described Omonade as one of the most outstanding lawmakers in the Delta State House of Assembly, noting that his legislative contributions, constituency engagement and respect for party leaders earned him broad support across the constituency.

“Everybody here is a witness to the effective performance of Hon. Matthew Omonade. He is one of the most brilliant members of the House. He speaks and they listen. He presents bills, respects everybody and has touched lives across the constituency,” Emerhor said.

The APC founding leader also stressed the importance of retaining experienced lawmakers in the Assembly, noting that Omonade’s return would strengthen the constituency’s influence and attract greater benefits.

“There is a strong clamour for him to return because we need a ranking member in the House so that the constituency can benefit more,” he added.

Emerhor further disclosed that Omonade is the only aspirant who has purchased the party’s nomination form for the seat, describing the adoption as consistent with the APC’s broader strategy of unity and consensus-building ahead of the elections.

“Our party has encouraged leaders to work together and speak with one voice. Hon. Omonade has consulted widely, demonstrated capacity and earned the confidence of the people. That is why we are presenting him as our consensus candidate,” he said.

The meeting was attended by prominent APC stakeholders, including Olorogun Ortega Emehor, OON (Chairman, Ughelli North APC Leadership Council; APC Leader, Ughelli North Constituency I); Hon. Samuel Mariere (Former Member, DTHA and Chairman, SUBEB); Prof. S. W. Ibodje (represented); Engr. Christabel Obiuwevbi (Member,g Direct Labour Agency); Chief Raphael Emecho (Leader, Ogor Ward); Chief Alice Jegede-Ikpen; Hon. Ovibje Sylvester (Commissioner, DESOPADEC); Deacon Esiokugbe Lucky; Olorogun Lucky Oghene-Omoru (Leader, Orogun II Ward 4) and Olorogun Shedrack Imonieroh, JP (Former Vice Chairman, Ughelli North LGC; Former PDP LGA Chairman, Ughelli North) and several other political leaders from the constituency.
