The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, reaffirmed the state's commitment to improving the quality of education delivery.

He spoke at the launch of the Strategic Document of the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) at the Lagos State Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Ikeja, Lagos.

He said innovation, stronger leadership, and continuous capacity building are crucial to improving education delivery.

He urged stakeholders to embrace teamwork, commitment, and selfless service in carrying out their responsibilities. He added that every teacher, principal, vice principal, and head of department must see leadership as a personal responsibility.

He said education managers must develop strong human relations skills and learn to manage their personalities while interacting with staff and students.

Alli-Balogun also stressed the need for continuous school evaluation, adding that school evaluators should adopt calm and tactical approaches during monitoring visits.

He said, "Building trust and asking strategic questions will produce better outcomes than intimidation."

He further disclosed plans for more large-scale training programmes to equip officers with modern supervisory skills. He added that the reforms would gradually change the narrative in the education sector and strengthen partnerships with international institutions.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MBSE), Abisola Adegbite, called for deliberate and strategic planning to improve service delivery and learning outcomes across the education sector.

She explained that effective planning helps education managers set priorities, allocate resources, and align policies with long-term goals. She added that all actions in the sector must aim for excellence in line with the Lagos State THEMES+ Agenda.

Adegbite said the MBSE is already aligning with present realities through curriculum review, teacher capacity development, digital learning integration, and infrastructure renewal.

She said about 200 education officers are currently undergoing training, describing human capacity development as critical to sustaining reforms in the school system.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to its policy of ensuring that no child is left behind. She added that strategic planning would remain central to increasing school enrolment, improving resource allocation, and strengthening overall sector performance.

The Director-General of OEQA, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, said the agency’s new strategic plan is designed to address critical gaps in school monitoring, staff motivation, and inter-agency collaboration within the education sector.

He said the rationale behind the document emerged from a detailed internal review of the agency’s strengths and weaknesses, poor collaboration with other education agencies, and an overreliance on manual processes, which an automated system will replace.

Dr. Ogunmuyiwa said the new document will transform how the OEQA operates, especially in its oversight of about two million learners across schools.

He said, “It is going to be more digital, and this gives the students that confidence that whatever their teachers are doing, whatever the school leadership is doing, there is somebody somewhere that is watching over them.”
