Drama unfolded in the Senate on Thursday as lawmakers moved to recommend the removal of the Registrar-General, Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, for failing to honour repeated invitations from the National Assembly.

The tension arose during the Senate Committee on Finance’s 2026 budget defence session attended by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and his Budget and Economic Planning colleague, Atiku Bagudu.

Proceedings were disrupted when senators noted Magaji’s absence. He was invited to account for the commission’s revenue but sent a representative instead.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, visibly angered, moved a motion urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove him, accusing him of disregarding legislative oversight.

“Since I came to the Senate, he has always given excuses that he is in the Villa. He has refused on so many occasions to honour our invitation. We have issues with the reconciliation of the revenue of CAC.

“This man is not above the law. We summoned the ministers and they came. I move that the Registrar-General be reported to Mr President for immediate removal because we cannot continue with this,” Kalu said.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole seconded the motion and proposed withholding approval of the CAC’s 2026 budget if the Registrar-General continues to ignore the committee.

Committee Chairman, Senator Sani Musa, cited unresolved discrepancies in the commission’s revenue reconciliation.

“The Registrar-General has refused on many occasions to honour the invitations of this committee. Anytime he’s invited, he sends junior officers,” Musa said.

The motion was adopted by voice vote.

The committee signalled it could escalate sanctions, including withholding budget approval, if the situation persists. As of the close of the session, there was no response from the Registrar-General.
