The Onikooko Family of Ilora in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State has rejected allegations of land grabbing, following a recent warning by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, that offenders risk up to 15 years’ imprisonment.

In a statement signed by Amos Olajire Oketokun, the family described a media report linking them to disputed land in Oyo West Local Government Area as misleading.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the land in question is located within Ilora in Afijio Local Government Area, not Oyo West,” the statement clarified.

The family maintained that ownership of the land has been conclusively settled by the courts, referencing judgments delivered by the Oyo State High Court and the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, on February 4, 2026.

“These judgments remain valid, binding, and enforceable under the Constitution, and no authority has the power to alter or disregard them,” Oketokun stated.

Responding to the broader concerns over land grabbing, the family insisted it is not engaged in any illegal activity, stressing that its actions strictly align with existing court rulings.

“The Onikooko family is not involved in land grabbing; we are only enforcing court judgments in our favour,” the statement added.

While expressing respect for traditional institutions, the family emphasised that customary authority does not override judicial decisions as provided under the law.

It warned that any attempt to misrepresent the status of the land or undermine existing court rulings would be considered a violation of the rule of law and would be resisted.
