The Federal Government said it was strengthening the institutional capacity of Nigeria’s cyber justice ecosystem through concrete, technology-driven measures.

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said this at the National Cascade Train-the-Trainer Leadership Retreat for the Joint Case Team on Cybercrime (JCTC) in Abuja.

He was represented by the Director of Administration of Criminal Justice Reforms, Mrs Leticia Ayoola-Daniels.

The retreat was organised by the JCTC with support from the Commonwealth Secretariat and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Fagbemi said the programme seeks to build a network of experts across Africa and the Caribbean to promote cooperation and capacity building.

Describing cybercrime as a growing global threat with trillions of dollars in annual losses, he said enforcement alone was insufficient.

“Enforcement alone cannot address the challenge; prevention must be structured, messaging consistent, and capacity deliberately multiplied.

“Ransomware attacks have increased, online fraud is becoming more sophisticated, and young people are being drawn into digital crime due to low barriers to entry.

“Sextortion, identity theft and cryptocurrency-enabled laundering continue to test our enforcement architecture. This training marks a shift from silos to a shared mission in tackling cybercrime,” he said.

Head of JCTC and Commonwealth Africa Cyber Fellow, Mrs Jamila Ade, said the fellowship had strengthened collaboration and recorded gains.

“Cybercrime does not respect institutional boundaries. It evolves rapidly, crosses jurisdictions and exploits coordination gaps. Our response must be structured and united,” she said.

Senior Research Officer for the Commonwealth’s Cyber Capability Programme, Dr Nkechi Amobi, commended Nigeria and participating agencies for their commitment to combating cybercrime.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that other speakers included Mr Akeem Lawal of NAPTIP, Olufemi Akinola of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, and Dr Muhammad Jiya of NIFU.
