Across Nigeria, informal savings systems known as Ajo are taking on renewed importance as individuals seek practical ways to meet pressing financial goals. Long regarded simply as a thrift method, financial observers now describe Ajo as a structured way of pooling contributions to access a lump sum at a specific, and often crucial, moment.

From market traders to young entrepreneurs, many Nigerians rely on Ajo to fund needs such as business inventory, rent payments, school fees, and equipment purchases. In cities like Lagos and Ibadan, participants are increasingly aligning their Ajo cycles with clearly defined financial objectives, reflecting a shift toward more intentional money management.

Unlike traditional savings, where funds accumulate gradually, Ajo provides immediate access to a larger sum when it is most needed. This timing advantage allows participants to secure bulk purchase discounts, close rental agreements, or invest in business opportunities that require upfront capital. For many, the system works not just because of discipline, but because of its ability to match financial access with opportunity.

However, Ajo is not without challenges. The system depends heavily on consistent contributions from all members, making it vulnerable to disruptions. Missed payments due to delayed salaries, economic pressures, or personal emergencies can affect the entire group, often delaying payouts.

Speaking on this, Riquiel Keudem, Co-founder of WeSpare, said the issue is not the system itself but the coordination behind it. “People already had a system that worked. What often broke was the coordination required to keep everyone contributing on time. That unpredictability can affect school fees, travel plans, and business operations, reducing the system’s biggest benefit: timely lump-sum payouts.”

He added that WeSpare is designed as a stabilisation layer, using regulated infrastructure to ensure payouts happen exactly when expected, rather than replacing traditional Ajo.

Such delays can carry real consequences. Missing a payout window may mean losing access to favourable business deals or affordable housing, forcing participants to seek alternative financing at higher costs. In most cases, the issue is not a loss of funds but a breakdown in timing.

In response, financial technology solutions such as WeSpare are emerging to address these gaps. Designed to improve reliability, the platform aims to preserve the community-driven nature of Ajo while introducing structures to ensure timely disbursement.

As fintech innovation grows, Ajo is evolving from a traditional practice into a more strategic financial tool.
