Two communities, Agwa and Ejemekuru in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State have cried out over deployable roads and failed school infrastructure across the communities.

They appealed to the state government and relevant political authorities to intervene in the worsening state of infrastructure and governance challenges affecting the communities.

The appeal was made at a news conference in Owerri, by Niger Delta Progressive Youth Movement (NDPYM).

The group raised concerns over what it described as long-standing neglect of the communities in road infrastructure, education and political representation.

Speaking at the briefing, the Coordinator of the group, Prince Chukwudi Maduba, said the situation in Agwa/Ejemekwuru axis had reached a critical point that required government attention.

He said the road linking the communities, Agwa/Ejemekwuru Road, had become bad, making movement difficult for residents and visitors.

Maduba also lamented the state of education in the communities, describing it as terrible.

He said many primary and secondary schools in Agwa and Ejemekwuru were in poor condition, with dilapidated classrooms, inadequate learning materials and overcrowded environments.

The coordinator said teachers and students were forced to study under difficult conditions that were not conducive, adding that if urgent action was not taken, the future of children in the communities might be further endangered.

He called for government intervention to upgrade and rebuild school infrastructure to meet acceptable standards.

According to him, the road, which serves as a major link between several communities in Oguta Local Government, has become almost impassable in many sections.

He said transportation of goods had been affected, while commuters now face long travel times, increased fares and frequent vehicle breakdowns due to the bad road conditions.

He noted that the poor state of the road had a direct impact on the economic lives of the people. “Farmers are unable to easily transport their produce to nearby markets, traders suffer losses due to delayed delivery of goods, and small businesses are struggling to survive under the weight of rising fares.”

He said emergency situations worsened, as patients and expectant mothers faced delays in accessing health care facilities.

Maduba drew attention to the state of education in the communities, describing it as deeply concerning.

He says many primary and secondary schools in Agwa and Ejemekwuru are in poor condition, with dilapidated classrooms, inadequate learning materials and overcrowded environments.

He said the challenges had continued to affect the quality of education and limit the academic performance of students, adding that teachers and students were forced to operate under difficult conditions that were not conducive to learning.

“If urgent action is not taken, the future of children in the communities may be further endangered.” Maduba called for government intervention to upgrade and rebuild school infrastructure to meet acceptable standards.

The group also raised concerns over what it described as political exclusion and lack of fair representation for the communities.

Maduba alleged that despite their population and contributions, Agwa and Ejemekwuru communities have not been adequately included in key political decisions and leadership positions in the state.
