The Lagos State Permanent Secretary, Office of the Chief of Staff, Semiu Kadri, has called for stronger financial discipline, accountability, and tax compliance among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to boost business growth and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reform agenda.
Kadri made the call at an event organised by the Financial Literacy and Accountability Initiative in collaboration with ATM Investment Limited.
The programme, themed “Building a Vibrant Tax Culture and Financial Accountability for Sustainable Growth,” was held at the Lagos Theatre, Epe.

He described the initiative as timely and strategic, noting that promoting enterprise sustainability is crucial for national development.
Kadri emphasised that a vibrant tax culture extends beyond revenue generation, fostering shared responsibility, transparency, trust, and accountability between the government and the business community.
Also speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary, Office of Internal Audit, Alaka Titilope, highlighted that Nigeria’s evolving tax landscape presents both opportunities and challenges for business operators, stressing that enlightenment programmes like this would clarify policies and improve compliance among MSMEs.
She added that voluntary tax compliance would strengthen public confidence in governance and enhance service delivery, thereby laying a foundation for sustainable economic growth.
Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Nosiru Onibon, said the dynamics of employment and entrepreneurship in Nigeria had changed, lamenting that many artisans now abandon their trades for government jobs due to declining patronage.

He stressed that MSMEs remained critical to national economic growth, urging business owners to monitor and expand their operations for long-term sustainability.

“As businesses grow, tax becomes necessary to enable the government to provide basic amenities. Tax compliance will always translate to growth and development,” he said.
Convener of the programme, Balogun Sobur, said the initiative was designed to address misconceptions surrounding tax reforms and promote sound financial management among MSMEs.
He said the programme would help business owners strengthen record-keeping practices, enhance decision-making, and improve profitability.
Sobur urged entrepreneurs to embrace discipline and focus, noting that sustainable business growth requires clarity of purpose.
