The Lagos State Agricultural Development (LSADA) has organised a pre-season training for extension officers for the forthcoming farming season.
In her opening speech at the two-day event held between Tuesday and Wednesday at the PhilJul Events Gallery in Agege, LSADA's Programme Manager, Mrs. Aderonke Tunji-Tubi said the theme of the training reflects the THEMES agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration.
''This year's theme “Driving Productivity through Resilient Agricultural Extension and Food Systems Transformation” is very timely and essential. Agriculture today is plagued with multiple challenges- climate change and its vagaries, rising food demand due to astronomical population growth, limited land availability as a result of urbanisation, and access to finance and technology adoption gaps . These challenges notwithstanding, present opportunity for innovation, collaboration and transformation.
''I want to commend the efforts of the Lagos State Government through our Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and food systems and our Permanent Secretary for their unwavering support and commitment to LSADA. Our activities at LSADA are all aligned to the THEMES + agenda of Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.
'' Pre-season training is critical because it prepares extension officers for the upcoming farming season, introduces new technologies and innovations, and strengthens and improves productivity planning.
''As extension professionals, we are at the forefront of ensuring that farmers are not only productive but also resilient, profitable and integrated into modern food systems.''

In her speech, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food System, Mrs. Abisola Ruth Olusanya, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Emmanuel Fatai Audu said the training was necessary because of the all-important role played by extension officers in enhancing productivity and chain value in agriculture in Lagos State.
'' The theme of this year's training, "Driving Agricultural Productivity and Food Systems Transformation Through Resilient Agricultural Extension Services" is both timely and strategic. It recognises the vital role of extension services as the bridge between innovation, policy and the farmers, who form the backbone of our food system.
''The role of agricultural extension in food systems transformation cannot be taken for granted. They are the "farmers' teachers", policy problem solvers, knowledge disseminators, technology transfer agents, capacity builders, and change facilitators. In a very dynamic world characterised by climate change, population growth, rapid urbanisation, and food supply disruptions, resilient extension services are no longer optional but very essential.
''Lagos State, being a megacity with limited land and a rapidly growing population, must adopt smart, innovative and resilient agricultural practices. This can only be achieved when our extension systems are strengthened, modernised, and equipped to deliver impact-driven services.''
Awards were also presented to three outstanding extension officers of LSADA at the event.
Earlier, in his goodwill message, Audu, who was represented by the Ministry's Director of Agricultural Business, Mrs. Aramide Ganzallo, urged the extension officers to actively engage in this training and contribute meaningfully to discussions that will shape the future of our food systems.
''This year's theme, 'Driving Agricultural Productivity and Food Systems Transformation Through Resilient Agricultural Extension Service Delivery,' is both timely and highly relevant. It aligns strongly with the Lagos State Government's Food Systems Transformation Roadmap, which prioritises sustainable food production, efficient value chains and enhanced resilience across the entire food systems. The roadmap recognises that achieving food security in Lagos requires a holistic approach - one that integrates production, processing, distribution, and consumption, while leveraging innovation and technology.
''A key pillar of this roadmap is the modernisation and strengthening of agricultural extension services. We understand that without effective knowledge dissemination and farmer support systems, the most well-designed policies and innovations cannot achieve their intended impact. This is why the government continues to invest in capacity-building initiatives such as training, digital extension platforms, and partnerships that enhance service delivery, '' Audu said.
The Special Adviser on Agriculture and Food System, Hon. Rotimi Fashola, who was represented by Mr. Omotosho Ade Victor also urged the participants to use the training to enhance their skills for greater performance.
