The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race has been rescheduled from 23 May to 30 May 2026, with organisers citing the need to complete enhanced logistical and safety arrangements.
Pamodzi Sports Marketing, organisers of the World Athletics Gold Label event, said the additional week allows for expanded medical coverage, improved security deployment, and upgraded spectator facilities.
Race Director Zack Amodu described the shift as a proactive measure to guarantee the comfort and safety of both athletes and fans.

"We are committed to delivering a world-class race experience. By moving the event forward by one week, we can finalise the upgraded support systems we've been working on, ensuring participants enjoy the best possible conditions," he said.
Amodu also revealed that the race's medical director has completed his World Athletics certification in Madrid, in compliance with a new World Athletics directive — making Okpekpe the first race in Nigeria to have a World Athletics-certified medical director.
The Okpekpe Road Race holds Gold Label status with World Athletics and has grown into one of Africa's most celebrated road races, attracting elite runners from across the globe. It was the first road race in Nigeria and West Africa to receive Label status and the first to have its course measured by a World Athletics-certified measurer.
Organisers stressed that the postponement reflects a positive drive to raise the race's quality and prestige, not any operational setback.
