The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, has appointed Ambassador Bolaji Akinremi as a member of his advisory council.

Akinremi is to serve on the Olubadan Economic and Investment Committee, a body mandated to mobilise at least N25 billion for investment in sustainable and profitable ventures capable of generating long-term economic returns. The committee is also tasked with reviving moribund companies across Ibadanland.

The appointment letter was presented to the diplomat on behalf of the monarch by Tajudeen Aremu, a former Head of Service of Oyo State and Bobajiro of Ibadanland, during a retirement reception organised by the International Relations Alumni Association of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The event, held at Jogor Event Centre in Ibadan, was attended by dignitaries, including former First Lady and wife of the Olubadan, Mutiat Ladoja, Professor Soji Adejumo, members of the Diplomatic Corps, associates, and family members.

Speaking on the appointment, Oba Ladoja said the decision followed a careful assessment of Akinremi’s track record and commitment to the development of Ibadanland.

“Having considered your previous performances and unalloyed commitment to the cause of Ibadanland, it is my pleasure to appoint you as a member of the committee saddled with the responsibility of moving the economy of our community forward,” the monarch stated.

He noted that the current state of economic activity in Ibadanland falls short of expectations, stressing the need for deliberate efforts to improve livelihoods and drive economic revival.

Dignitaries at the event commended Akinremi for his contributions during his diplomatic career, describing his service as impactful and exemplary.

In her remarks, Mutiat Ladoja described the diplomat as compassionate and committed to the progress of Ibadanland, noting that his years in service brought distinction not only to Nigeria but also to Oyo State. She urged him to sustain his legacy of service even in retirement.

Also speaking, Managing Director of New Horizon Nigeria, Yomi Akano, described Akinremi as a man of integrity whose influence has opened doors for younger professionals. He recalled the diplomat’s efforts during the Ukraine crisis, when he undertook risky trips to evacuate stranded Nigerians, particularly students.

Other speakers, including Prince Chris Adetayo and Prof. Bola Morakinyo, praised Akinremi’s contributions to the International Relations Alumni Association and Obafemi Awolowo University, noting that his support for students and institutional development has left a lasting impact.

The appointment is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts to reposition Ibadanland’s economy through strategic investment and revitalisation initiatives.

Also speaking, Prof Adejumo said since he knew Akinremi, he found in him an excellent man of valor and one of the shining stars Nigeria has ever produced in the diplomatic service.

He urged him, as he embarks on his retirement, to see it as an opportunity to be better and more purposeful in service delivery. He enjoined him to engage in physical activities and socialise so as to keep his body and mind still active, especially in retirement.

Mr Akeem Aponmade, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Iroko Community Grammar School Alumni Association, said the event is to celebrate a man of many parts. He recalled how they met back in the alma mater and how Akinremi emerged as the president of the old student Association.

He said that, since his emergence, transformative ventures that have helped the alma mater improve have been introduced.

In a side interview at the event, the diplomat, now a world record holder, expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying it's reassuring that his efforts haven't gone unnoticed. He recalls tough times in his career, including risking his life to rescue Nigerians from Ukraine, without expecting any payment. He said his motivation was to serve, driven by a vision for excellence.

He credits his success to his passion for the job and encourages colleagues still in service to be patient and have a vision. He believes civil servants shouldn't be motivated by money, as the Foreign Service is a tough terrain with little financial reward.

The diplomat stresses the importance of accurate recognition for Foreign Service officers, who often work behind the scenes to promote Nigeria's interests. He laments that diplomatic postings are often used as political tools, saying it's unfair to give ambassadorial roles to non-career diplomats.

He urges the government to prioritize career diplomats for key roles and calls on journalists to help promote the importance of the Foreign Service. He expresses pride in his career choice and hopes his story inspires others, concluding that he's honoured by the recognition and grateful for the opportunity to serve.

The high point of the event was the presentation of gifts by various groups, individuals, and bodies.
