A leading aspirant for the Ondo South Senatorial District seat under the All Progressives Congress, Mathew Oye Oyerinmade, has expressed support for adopting consensus in selecting the party’s candidate.
Oyerinmade said his backing for the consensus option is conditional on transparency and acceptance by all party stakeholders. He made this known after meeting with members of the party’s State Working Committee at the APC secretariat in Akure.
He noted that while he remains a strong contender in the race, he is open to any primary mode, including consensus, as long as fairness is guaranteed.
“If consensus produces the best result, so be it. What is important is that the process is fair, credible and reflects the will of party members,” he said.

The aspirant, however, dismissed speculations that he had stepped down or lost his ticket, describing such claims as false and politically motivated.
“How can I step down? That is not possible. I am in the race and fully committed,” he said.
Oyerinmade added that rumours about his withdrawal were aimed at misleading his supporters but stressed that he has continued to reassure them of his participation.

“There are always rumours in politics, but we have made it clear to our supporters that there is no truth in those claims,” he said.

Speaking on his ambition, he said it is driven by a desire to improve the welfare of constituents across Ondo South, particularly women, youths, and the elderly.
“I have travelled across the six local governments in the district and I understand their needs. My goal is to bring development closer to the people,” he added.
Earlier, the aspirant formally declared his intention to contest the senatorial seat in 2027 and urged party leaders to ensure a level playing field for all contenders.
“I am here to inform the State Working Committee of my aspiration to represent Ondo South at the Senate in 2027. I believe the party will be fair to all aspirants,” he said.
In response, the Ondo State APC Chairman, Kolawole Babatunde, said the party leadership would determine the primary mode and urged aspirants to remain loyal to its decisions.
“Whether by consensus or direct primaries, aspirants must abide by the leadership’s decision. That is what we call party discipline,” Babatunde said.
He added that the final approval of candidates rests with the state governor and party leader, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, assuring that due process would be followed ahead of the 2027 elections.
