Scores of members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors, led by a former council chairman, Hon. Dele Olatunji, and the PDP House of Assembly candidate in the 2023 general election, Hon. Anjorin Peter (a.k.a Opekete), alongside other PDP executive members, were received into the APC at the Civic Centre, Ode-Irele, on Sunday.

Welcoming the new members, the APC chairman in Irele, Hon. Zachariah Omoge, commended the defectors for their courage and resolve to join the ruling party.

He assured them of equal treatment with existing members, noting that the APC had sufficient capacity to accommodate more members.

Omoge also urged the defectors to participate actively in the party’s ongoing membership registration and the Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

He also appealed to the new defectors to uphold party discipline and submit to the supremacy of the ruling APC.

The State Woman Leader of the party, Mrs. Mojisola Lijoka, applauded the former PDP leaders and members for what she described as their "timely decision" to join the APC, assuring them of equal opportunities within the party.

Receiving the defectors on behalf of the state government, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa said their decision was a significant boost to the APC ahead of the 2027 general election.

The governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Legislative and Party Matters, Babatunde Kolawole, said the defection further underscored the growing strength of the APC across Ondo State.

He commended the party leaders and stakeholders in the local council for their commitment to the growth of the APC, describing the defection as the end of meaningful opposition in the Irele Local Council Area.

Aiyedatiwa urged the new members to work closely with party leaders to strengthen the party’s structure and enhance its electoral prospects.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Segun Omoyofunmi, advised the defectors to integrate fully into the party at the ward and local government levels.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Anjorin said internal disputes within the PDP informed their decision to defect to the APC.
