Iran’s preparations for their upcoming international friendly against Nigeria have been thrown into disarray following the absence of key forward Sardar Azmoun amid escalating political tensions.

Azmoun, one of Iran’s most prolific strikers with 57 goals in 91 international appearances, has reportedly been dropped from the national team after a controversial public appearance involving Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The development comes at a sensitive time in relations between Iran and some Gulf states.

Further reports indicate that authorities have taken action affecting players based abroad, including Mehdi Ghayedi and former international Soroush Rafiei, raising concerns about squad stability.

Despite the disruptions, Iran are expected to honour their scheduled fixtures against the Nigeria national football team and Costa Rica in Antalya, Turkey, as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the absence of experienced players like Azmoun could significantly weaken the team, potentially giving Nigeria an edge in what is expected to be a closely watched encounter.
