A foremost pro-Tinubu support group, the South-West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA), has said the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as incumbent President rescued Nigeria from looming bankruptcy.

The group, which mobilised support for Tinubu ahead of the 2023 presidential election, noted that he assumed office during severe economic challenges but has since introduced policies aimed at stabilising the economy.

Speaking on Wednesday during a visit to the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, at his palace, SWAGA National Chairman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said Tinubu’s emergence prevented Nigeria from sliding into economic collapse.

Adeyeye, who also chairs the Board of the Nigerian Ports Authority, said the country was on the verge of economic failure before the current administration led by Tinubu took over, warning that without decisive intervention, the situation could have deteriorated into hyperinflation.

He said, “If not for some key aspects of Tinubu’s policies, I don’t know where Nigeria would be by now. I want to assure you that Nigeria would have been completely bankrupt, maybe a litre of fuel would be selling for over N10,000, because you don't even have the money to import it."

He added that a rigidly regulated system would have hindered the operations of the Dangote refinery, stressing that ongoing reforms have created a more enabling environment.

Prince Adeyeye maintained that removing the fuel subsidy was inevitable, noting that all major presidential candidates in the 2023 election had acknowledged its unsustainability.

"Today, there are more resources for all levels of government. States and local governments now receive significantly higher allocations, enabling them to execute projects and meet obligations,” he said.

He listed improved access to student loans through NELFUND, payment of pensions and gratuities, deployment of CNG buses, and efforts to stabilise food prices as indicators of progress under the administration.

Adeyeye also highlighted infrastructure development, particularly the adoption of concrete roads, which he said would ensure long-term durability.

Also speaking, the Convener of SWAGA and Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Oyetunde Ojo, said the group’s renewed campaign under SWAGA 2.0 builds on its earlier efforts and reflects confidence in President Tinubu’s performance and leadership qualities.

He explained that members of the group prepared with "SWAGA 2.0" to ensure mobilisation both at the grassroots and urban centres to secure President Tinubu’s re-election.

Remarking, Oba Aladetoyinbo lauded the President for his visionary leadership, bold economic reforms, and inclusive governance, noting that these have repositioned Nigeria for recovery and sustainable growth.

The monarch also acknowledged Tinubu’s role in facilitating key projects, including upgrading the State Specialists Hospital to the Federal University of Technology, Akure Teaching Hospital; the continuation of the construction of the Akure–Ado Ekiti road; the ongoing expansion of the Ore-Ondo-Akure highway; and the approval of the Akure campus of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria.

Meanwhile, during a courtesy visit to the Government House, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, praised SWAGA for mobilising support for the president across the South-West.

Aiyedatiwa declared that Tinubu had rescued Nigeria’s economy from collapse and expressed confidence in his chances of securing re-election in 2027.

He said the administration inherited economic instability, excessive borrowing, and currency challenges, but has since introduced reforms that strengthened governance and restored confidence.

"The whole nation has seen the quality of leadership we have, and there is no alternative now. That is why many are aligning with the ruling party,” he said.

The governor added that Ondo State is targeting over one million votes for the president in the next election, expressing optimism that the goal is achievable through grassroots mobilisation.

"We are not just talking about winning; we want to deliver overwhelming votes. A million votes is our minimum target in Ondo, and we will work towards it,” he added.
