President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renewal of Professor Ayo Omotayo's appointment as the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, for a final term of four years.

The renewal was announced on Wednesday in a statement issued by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Omotayo, a professor of Environmental Sustainability, was first appointed Director-General of the nation’s foremost policy think tank in November 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Senate subsequently confirmed his appointment in February 2022.

With the renewal, Omotayo will continue to lead the institute responsible for high-level policy research, strategic studies, and training senior public officials and leaders through programmes such as the Senior Executive Course.

Before he was appointed Director-General of NIPSS, Omotayo built an extensive academic career spanning several decades, particularly at the Lagos State University (LASU).

He attended the University of Ibadan between 1980 and 1990, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Geography, specialising in environmental sustainability.

Omotayo began his teaching career at Lagos State University in 1985 and rose steadily through the academic ranks. By 1992, at the age of 30, he had become a Senior Lecturer at the institution.

During his years at LASU, he held several leadership positions, including serving as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences between 2012 and 2017.

Before his appointment as Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in 2021, he served as Director of the Centre for Planning at the university.

The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, located in Kuru near Jos, Plateau State, serves as Nigeria’s premier policy think tank and provides strategic leadership training for top-level public officials, military officers, private sector executives, and policymakers.

Through research, policy dialogue, and executive training programmes, the institute plays a key role in shaping national development strategies and strengthening governance in Nigeria.

Omotayo’s renewed tenure is expected to consolidate the institute’s role in supporting evidence-based policymaking and strategic leadership development for the country.
