The UNICEF has partnered with the Kano State Government, with support from the European Union (EU), to reduce the number of out-of-school children through the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP).

Speaking at a one-day stakeholder consultation on ABEP, the UNICEF Chief of Field Services, Judith Leveillee, commended Kano for its leadership and commitment to inclusive education.

She said the programme provides a crucial opportunity to accelerate learning for over-age and out-of-school children.

Leveillee noted that despite progress, many children in Kano are still denied their right to education due to poverty, disability, gender, and social norms.

She stressed that ABEP would enable vulnerable children to acquire basic skills and transition into formal schooling, vocational training, or lifelong learning.

Highlighting UNICEF’s collaboration with the state government, Leveillee said efforts include strengthening early childhood education, improving literacy and numeracy, expanding alternative learning opportunities, and promoting safe, inclusive, and child-friendly environments.

She added that UNICEF will continue supporting the development of Kano State’s 10-year Strategic Education Sector Plan, three-year Operational Plan, and Local Education Sector Operational Plan.

Leveillee urged stakeholders to renew their commitment to reducing out-of-school children and improving learning outcomes, emphasising that “every child deserves not just access to education, but an education that equips them with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to thrive.”

Earlier, Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr Ali Makoda, lauded UNICEF, F3O, PLANE, PLAN, and other development partners for their contributions to the sector.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaj Bashir Muhammad, Makoda said the support has significantly elevated education in the state.

Makoda assured that all projects and workshops initiated by partners would be maintained, stressing that none would be neglected.

He urged participants to engage with open minds and ensure that lessons learned are cascaded to institutions across the state.

He added that collaborative efforts would continue to enhance educational opportunities in Kano State.
